ANGELINA Jolie is an evil witch ... in the new film maleficent, that is.
Jolie, who is presently in Queensland directing the war drama Unbroken, stars because the titular villain in Disney's retelling of their 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty from the witch's point of view.
Elle Fanning plays the princess, Aurora, who pricks her finger and is cursed by maleficent.
The first trailer for the film has simply been released and shows the horned, yellow-eyed maleficent rising from the shadows once Aurora calls her out. maleficent then summons big, prickled vines from the earth as green fire flies up from her hands. The trailer ends with a snippet of Jolie's witchy cackle.
The landscape is luscious and fantastical, but dark.
Disney's spiel on the film explains that maleficent was once "a lovely, pure-hearted young woman", whose idyllic life is shattered by an invading army. She fights to defend the land however is ruthlessly betrayed - "an act that begins to show her pure heart to stone". bent revenge, maleficent places a curse upon the king's newborn girl, Aurora.
But the witch involves realise that Aurora is the only one who will bring peace to the kingdom.
Maleficent opens in Australia on June 19. It co-stars Sharlto copley, sam riley and Imelda Staunton.
While promoting his previous film, Elysium, copley told News corp Australia that executive producer Jolie was the "critical person in the chain" once he was attempting to win the role of King Stefan in maleficent. He grew a beard and spent 5 days performing on a screen test to impress the leading lady.
"I met Angelina shortly after District 9," Copley said. "She has a certain energy that I resonate with, and I felt, 'If i go opposite you on camera it may be interesting, i'd wish to do that'. i actually felt that terribly strongly. when I was doing the test i was like, 'Get this issue to Angelina!'
"I like this film. It's this huge fantasy world however it has some great funny characters and a true heart to the main story, which you do not get typically in those things."
He added that Jolie's performance in maleficent can remind people she is more than simply Brad Pitt's partner.
"She has this unimaginable range that people forget, because she has become such an icon in our society. It's going to be a awfully fascinating performance from her."
